How do I check if a company is in liquidation?
Search the company name or Companies House number against The Gazette on the free insolvency search. A winding-up order, a resolution for creditors’ voluntary liquidation or a liquidator’s appointment notice means the company is in liquidation; a winding-up petition means a creditor has asked the court to put it there. How do I find out if there is a winding-up petition against a company?
A creditor’s petition must be advertised in The Gazette at least seven business days before the hearing, so the winding-up petition search by company name or number is the way to find it. The notice gives the petitioner, the court and the hearing date.
I want to close or liquidate my own company. Is this the right place?
No. Gazette Search finds and screens published insolvency notices; it does not wind companies up. To liquidate a solvent company you need a licensed insolvency practitioner for a members’ voluntary liquidation, or Companies House form DS01 for a simple strike-off. For an insolvent company, speak to a licensed insolvency practitioner about a creditors’ voluntary liquidation.
